scoring just twice in his first 35 games to open the season.
Andrei Markov had the other Montreal goal, while Jaroslav Halak
stopped 21 shots to earn the win.
Blake Wheeler and Milan Lucic countered for Boston,
who are four points back of Montreal but still have three games in

CANADIENS COACH JACQUES MARTIN INVOKES 'WIN AND STAY IN' FOR HIS DECISION TO START JAROSLAV HALAK. CAREY PRICE IS 3-0 AGAINST THE BRUINS THIS SEASON, BUT WILL BE BACKING UP HALAK WHO IS 4-0 SINCE THE OLYMPIC HOCKEY TOURNAMENT WHEN HE STARRED FOR SLOVAKIA.
COACH MARTIN TELLS CJAD THAT RETURN DATES FOR MARC-ANDRE' BERGERON AND MIKE CAMMALLERI HAVE NOW BEEN PUSHED BACK. CAMMALLERI'S RETURN VS. THE LEAFS NEXT SATURDAY IS NOW HIGHLY DOUBTFUL. BERGERON COULD BE BACK BY THEN, HOWEVER.
The Canadiens' Maxime Lapierre returns to the lineup for a battle against the Bruins sans Marc Savard tonight on your home for the Habs -- CJAD 800. Expect Carey Price, who has played well against the Bruins this season, to get the start in goal.
Lapierre's return resulted in Ben Maxwell being sent back down to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.
He was suspended 4-games for his hit from behind against Scott Nichol, while Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke walked after he concussed Savard, who will be gone for the rest of the season. Lapierre would not touch hockey's hot-button headshot issue with a comparison to his supension, which he says is in the past; however, who can blame the Bruins for their frustration-level with the NHL ?
Live coverage of the Habs' salute to the Olympians during the Kaizen Countdown to Opening Faceoff at 6:30 with Rick Moffat and Murray Wilson. The Canadiens recall Ben Maxwell from the Bulldogs with Max Lapierre suspended for slamming the Sharks' Scott Nichol into the boards. No penalty was called but Nichol suffered a shoulder injury and San Jose' players took offense. Sharks coaches and players called it "really dangerous" and "real dirty".
Lapierre and Coach Jacques Martin says there was certainly no intent on the Habs' forward's part. He was "trying to box out" as Nichol looked for a rebound off the goalpost, having failed to beat Carey Price for a goal on a breakaway.
The Canadiens put Sergei Kostitsyn on a short leash at practise Friday in LA. The offensive star for Belarus at the Olympics was relegated to the 4th line, replaced by rookie Tom Pyatt on the top line with Plekanec and Sergei's big brother Andrei. Listen
Truth is both Andrei and Sergei have struggled the past 2 games to bury numerous scoring chances.
Pyatt has scored 4 points in his last 5 games since being recalled by GM Pierre Gauthier. He's shown flashes of speed, hustle and smarts with the puck. All the things Sergei has only rarely provided in a dismal season. Much of the adversity he's faced has been of his own creation, starting with a poor showing at training camp and his wildcat strike refusal to accept a demotion to Hamilton.
PRICE ON FIRE BUT SHARKS STILL BEAT CANADIENS 3-2
Listen CJAD HIGHLIGHTS+LOCKER ROOM
Dany Heatley scored the tying goal and Manny Malhotra delivered the winner in a span of less than three minutes in the third period to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.
Patrick Marleau scored a short-handed goal and Evgeni Nabokov made 28 saves for the Sharks, who were coming off their first back-to-back regulation losses of the season.
This game appeared headed that direction with Carey Price stopping almost everything San Jose sent his way and the posts doing the rest on three occasions to help Montreal hang onto the one-goal lead.
But the Sharks finally broke through with the two goals in the third to win for just the third time in 17 games this season when they trailed after two periods.
The Canadiens had been 19-1-0 when leading after two.

Mathieu Darche also scored for the injury-riddled Canadiens (28-25-6), who only needed 18 saves from Jaroslav Halak to get the victory.
Halak was coming off back-to-back 45-save victories over the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins.

As the Canadiens wrapped up a centre-ice meeting, Carey Price gave Andrei Markov a big hug. While players like Josh Gorges deny there was ever any blowup between the assistant captain and the young goalie, Price and Markov cleared the air with their actions before leaving the ice.
Markov says the media shouldn't be looking for "bad stories....you should be helping the team." Price did not speak to the media hordes but let his stick do the talking...a happy-face drawn on the blade of his goalie stick.
BOLTS 3 HABS 0The Habs generated zero offence in Tampa as they fell 3-0 to the Lightning. Carey Price watched as his team lost 65 percent of the faceoffs, and 95 percent of the battles. Hockey legend Jean Beliveau was listed in stable condition on Thursday after being admitted to hospital for unspecified tests. A spokeswoman for the McGill University Health Centre said more information on the health of the Montreal Canadiens legend would be released as it became available.
One report said Beliveau suffered a stroke Wednesday night but team spokesman Donald Beauchamp said he was unable to confirm the reason for the tests. It is believed Beliveau's life is not in danger.
The hockey great has had a number of health problems in the past.
In 2000, Beliveau was diagnosed with throat cancer after a tumour was discovered in his neck. He was treated and eventually recovered. Beliveau has also had heart-related problems in the past and was hospitalized in 1996.
As recently as December 2008, Beliveau had to be admitted to hospital after a sudden drop in blood pressure following a friend's funeral in Montreal.
Beliveau, 78, won 10 Stanley Cups during an 18-year playing career with the Canadiens.
Last summer, Beliveau was named honorary captain of Canada's 2010 men's Olympic hockey team.

SENS 4 CANADIENS 2The Canadiens scored early and often...but not enough to put away the Ottawa Senators Monday night in Ottawa. Riding a four-game winning streak, the Habs fell 4-2, blowing a two-goal lead in the process. Mike Cammalleri, with the 20,000th goal in the history of the Habs, and Benoit Pouliot, with his first as a Hab, gave Montreal a 2-0 lead before this one was 10 minutes old. However, with Pascal Leclaire providing the heroics in goal, the Sens chipped away with a goal in the first, another in the second, and the winner in the third, by Chris Neil, sealing the deal with an empty netter in the final seconds. The loss snapped Jaro Halak's personal four-game winning streak. Brian Gionta was back in the lineup after missing 21 games with a broken bone in his foot, and assisted on the goal by Pouliot.
Gionta probable for Wednesday and Thursday against the Lightning and Panthers however Listen
By then Roman Hamrlik could be back on defense as well. That would likely force Matt D'Agostini and Georges Laraque to the "healthy scratch" list to close out the roadtrip, with Marc-Andre' Bergeron expected to stay in the lineup as a power-play/4th liner and D-insurance should Hamrlik's knee trouble flare up.

JARO CAREER NIGHT, HABS STEAL WIN IN OT
Jaroslav Halak faced a 50-shot bombardment and Marc-Andre' Bergeron scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals as the Habs rallied to beat the Thrashers 4-3 in OT. The Canadiens came back from a 1-0 deficit after 1 period, only to squander a 2-1 lead early in the 3rd. The Thrashers held a 3-2 lead until a late powerplay opportunity cashed in by Bergeron's slapshot from the point.
Bergeron was hurt while scoring the gamewinner, his 2nd in OT since joining the Habs. Coach Martin downplayed the significance of the injury, but the Habs also lost Paul Mara again to "upper body injury". Listen

After registering 3 points with the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday, Benoit Pouliot arrived in Atlanta to join the Canadiens. Pouliot was acquired for Guillaume Latendresse from the Wild, and is a former 4th overall first-round draft pick in 2005, taken just before the Canadiens chose Carey Price. Just last week his former Coach Todd Richards of Minnesota questioned his work ethic in explaining why the Wild looked to deal him.
Roman Hamrlik is frustrated his knee injury is more troublesome than first feared. He twisted it tumbling over Carey Price and catching his skate in a rut in the ice at New Jersey last Wednesday. It is possible the Canadiens will let "Hammer" rest up before Christmas.
CANADIENS 3 ISLANDERS 0
It was a script straight out of Hollywood: Andrei Markov returns for his first game back, on the eve of his 31st birthday, and scores a pair of goals to lead the Canadiens to a 3-0 win over the Islanders. All three Montreal goals came on the power play, with Glen Metropolit getting the other. Jaroslav Halak was perfect, kicking out 40 shots for his first shutout of the season.
A snowstorm in the New York area kept the crowd down to just under 8,000: many of them wearing Canadiens' colours. The Habs were snowed in and remained in New York overnight.

HABS 5-1 WINNERS OVER BRUINS
On the night the Montreal Canadiens turned 100, they played like the great teams of old.
Mike Cammalleri made like Rocket Richard with three goals and Carey Price like Georges Vezina with a 37-save effort as the Canadiens celebrated their 100th anniversary with a 5-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Friday night.
``We all played inspired hockey,'' said Price. ``There were a lot of faces here I grew up watching.
``We really wanted to win this one. We were pumped up watching the guys out there and chatting with vets who won championships. We wanted to win for them as well. We're all pretty proud to be Canadiens tonight.''
The Canadiens, founded eight years before the NHL was formed on Dec. 4, 1909, marked the occasion with a nostalgic 75-minute pre-game ceremony in which the jerseys of 1940s greats Elmer Lach and Butch Bouchard were retired.
Then they went out and skated like their record 24 Stanley Cup teams from the past, with opportunistic goals, tight defence when it was needed and superb goaltending.
The performance had the sell-out crowd of 21,273 already on a high from a ceremony packed with stars of the past in a roar for most of the night.
``Hopefully it had an inspiring effect,'' added Cammalleri, whose team was coming off two consecutive weak efforts including a 6-2 loss in Buffalo on Thursday night. ``We played two games we weren't happy with and I'd hope we would have played like that anyway, but for sure, it hit an emotional chord.''
Cammalleri's three goals came in a four-goal second period, while Glen Metropolit and Jaroslav Spacek also scored for Montreal (13-14-2), which ended a four-game winless run in a game witnessed by dozens of former greats, including Hall of Famers like Jean Beliveau, Guy Lafleur, Patrick Roy and even former Detroit star Gordie Howe.
Vladimir Sobotka scored for the Bruins (14-9-5), who looked to have no legs after waiting out the ceremony. They ended a seven-game string without a loss in regulation time. And goaltender Tim Thomas was pulled after allowing five goals on 23 shots in two periods in favour of Tuukka Rask.
Thomas refused to blame the ceremonies.
``I don't think that was it I don't know what happened,'' he said. ``From top to bottom, that was one of our worst efforts of the year.''
The Canadiens were jubilant in their dressing room, where Hollywood actor Viggo Mortensen, who introduced Lafleur during the ceremonies, shook hands with players from his favourite club.
``It was awesome,'' said Mortensen. ``I'm sure Cammalleri will never forget tonight.''
He got that right.
``This was amazing for anyone who is a fan of sports,'' Cammalleri said. ``I can't express what it means, it's such a special thing.''
For the first time in nine games, the Canadiens came out of the first period with a lead as Spacek got the only goal on a blast from the point just as a power play ended at 8:30.
On a night of many standing ovations, the Canadiens got another as they killed a two-man Boston advantage for a full two minutes early in the second frame. Only half a minute after returning to full strength, Tomas Plekanec shot wide on a breakaway but Cammalleri followed in to score at 8:10.
Matt Hunwick slid the puck to his goaltender, but Thomas let it slip out in front for Cammalleri to pounce on and score for a 3-0 lead.
Metropolit was at the side of the net to tip in a diagonal pass from Gill at 16:07 and Cammalleri one-timed a pass from Scott Gomez past Thomas for his 15th of the season at 17:29.
The Bell Centre was littered with caps for the hat-trick, as well as one Bruins sweater thrown in by a spectator, while Cammalleri wore an ear-to-ear smile.
``I'll never forget that noise,'' he said. ``What else can you say but wow.''
Sobotka tipped a point shot by Matt Hunwick past Price 4:45 into the third period.
Montreal winger Sergei Kostitsyn left the game in the second period with a knee injury, but said later he felt OK and did not expect to miss any games. Coach Jacques Martin said more would be known on the injury when Kostitsyn is examined on Saturday.
Among the pre-recorded scoreboard tributes to the Canadiens shown throughout the game were messages from Alex Ovechkin, Martin Brodeur, Vladislav Tretiak, Don Cherry (who was booed), as well as Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Canadiens rarely play at home on Friday nights, but their all-time record in those games is 10-0-4.
Notes: Georges Laraque returned after serving a five-game suspension for a nasty trip on Detroit's Niklas Kronwall and Gill was back after 14 games off with a foot injury. That bumped rookies Tom Pyatt and Ryan White from the Montreal lineup. . . With seven defencemen dressed, Marc-Andre Bergeron skated on left wing on the fourth line. . . Former Montreal captain Mike Keane took a game off from the AHL Manitoba Moose to attend the ceremonies. ``This only happens once in 100 years, I'm not going to miss it,'' he said. . . When Bouchard's No. 3 was retired before the game, defenceman Ryan O'Byrne changed to No. 20.

NASHVILLE - A record-breaking night for the Nashville Predators left them victorious, while a record-tying night for Carey Price left him with a loss.
Steve Sullivan scored two goals and Pekka Rinne made 20 saves to lead the Predators to a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.
Nashville outshot Montreal 55-20 and the Predators have won two straight and six of their past eight. Montreal has dropped four of six.
The 55 shots are a franchise record for Nashville.
Price made a career-high 53 saves for Montreal. The 53 saves tied Wayne Thomas' Canadiens record for most saves in a game. Thomas did it March 10, 1974 in a 5-4 win at Pittsburgh. Price also equalled the record for the number of saves in a period with 23 in the opening 20 minutes.
``They threw a lot of pucks at the net tonight,'' Price said. ``Records aside, we were here to get two points, not a record.''
``He performed well, there is no doubt,'' Canadiens coach Jacques Martin said of his goaltender. ``It's unfortunate that his teammates didn't take advantage of a performance like that.''
Rinne got his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career. Sullivan had just two goals in the team's first 17 games of the season. Sullivan scored his first goal at 10:48 of the opening period when he collected a rebound of his own shot and was able to beat Price with a backhand.
The Predators set a franchise record with 24 shots on goal in the first period. The previous record for shots in a period was 23 set Feb. 28, 2004, against the New York Rangers.

MONTREAL - A wild game between the rival Canadiens and Maple Leafs came down to a shootout, where Montreal has been unbeatable this season.
Mike Cammalleri and Scott Gomez scored as the Canadiens pulled out a 5-4 shootout win after blowing a two-goal lead in the third period.
Six of Montreal's seven wins this season have come in overtime or shootouts including an OT win over the Leafs in the season opener for both teams on Oct. 1 in Toronto.
``Our fans like OT and shootouts I guess,'' said Cammalleri. ``We didn't want to give them those two goals.``The fans were singing 'Na Na' (Goodbye) and were ready to go out and enjoy their Saturday night. We'd have liked to hold them off, but the big thing was to get the win.''

Rick Moffat's game recap+his game calls as heard on CJAD 800 Listen
Sidney Crosby scored a hat-trick and the Penguins proved their Stanley Cup Hangover Cure is more than a match for the Win&Stay In Halak Method. The Penguins chased Halak after 40 minutes, beating the Canadiens 6-1. Only Tomas Plekanec could beat Marc-Andre' Fleury during a 5-on-3 Habs powerplay in the 3rd period. Once again, Habs head coach Jacques Martin put all of his offensive eggs in one basket. And this time it paid off with a "W".
