A review: Four hours in search of Michael Ignatieff.

I’m flying 36,000 feet over the prairies, breathing recycled air, wondering if the jet was in Mexico recently too easily distracted from the book I chose to keep my mind off such things. Returning from Moose Jaw via Regina, Edmonton and then to Montreal reminded me that we live in a big country and traveling is just one of its challenges. Nothing like what Mr. Ignatieff’s ancestors faced as I read, but I chose his new book hoping to know better the man who considers himself a contender for the Prime Minister’s job. I finished the last page as the landing gear was lowered over Mount Royal and the plane approached Trudeau Airport. Back in Edmonton, the guy ahead of me had chosen the new book on the late prime minister and now I wish I had too. While there is no question Mr. Ignatieff’s family tree is rooted deep in Canada, he never really went out on a limb, offering mostly shade and not a lot of light. I think this book is an attempt to connect Mr. Ignatief to Canada against the criticisms of the time he has spent abroad. While I bought the book I don’t buy the message. The Liberal party have united behind Mr. Ignatief as their leader, I am certain it will take more than these 200 pages to convince enough Canadians to do the same.
